Whenever someone has brought up one of the standard stereotypes about the place - that it’s full of wogs and bogans, or feral gangs, for example - I’ve been quick to defend it, saying that the ethnic community adds some real spice to the city and that it has no more bogans or ferals than any other city.

It had been quite some time since my last visit to the ‘Gong so Ez Power (who had never been there) and I jumped in Sir Lancer-lot and headed there for the Australia Day long weekend.

We arrived on the Saturday afternoon. On Sunday morning I went for a walk along the beach from South Wollongong beach to North Wollongong beach. The place was trashed. Rubbish, beer bottles (smashed and whole) and alcoholic lolly water bottles were strewn everywhere. Quite a few drunks were still hanging around the harbour swearing and cursing and carrying on like turkeys. It was appalling.

Had I always been blind to this whilst I lived there? Or had I just been a part of it all and not really noticed? All of these events were enough to turn me off the place. I had missed the area, especially the beaches, but now… I’ll never move back there.

To be fair, we did have some good experiences. We had a few excellent meals, including the seafood platter to end all seafood platters at the Harbour Front Restaurant. We found some cool shops around the place and I highly approve of the cinemas in Shellharbour. The new highway down to Kiama is excellent.

But overall, this weekend’s experiences were enough to make me realise that Wollongong is not the town for me any more. I miss the good times that I had while I lived there, but I do not miss the city itself, not one bit.

I took these pics about an hour ago. It’s beautiful up there at the moment. Everything is a dark shade of green and the wild flowers are out. If you’ve never been to the Snowy Mountains in summer, I highly recommend it.

I had spotted some storms over the Main Range and the radar was showing a fair bit of lightning activity, so I headed up hoping to catch some lightning photos. Unfortunately I turned up a bit too late.
